‘F1’ Laps ‘M3gan 2.0’ at the box office with an opening of $ 58 million

Warner Bros./apple’s “F1” accelerates the speed with a strong mouth mouth this weekend, heading for an opening weekend of $ 58 million of 3,661 theaters while “M3gan 2.0” of Universal / Blumhouse wins less than half of its 2023 predecessor with an estimated opening at only $ 10 million.

“F1” was screened before the weekend for a domestic opening of around $ 50 million, although some exhibitors told Thewrap that they were optimistic for a closer start to $ 60 million. Produced by Apple Original Films with Warner Handling Distribution and the two studios jointly marketing the film, “F1”, a net budget of at least $ 200 million, but will benefit from very strong figures abroad thanks to the global appeal of Formula 1, winning $ 39.5 million and cash until Friday.

“F1” also benefits from a very strong reception of the public with rotten scores of 83% criticism and 97% audiences as well as an A on cinemascore opening moviegoers delighted by the exciting racing scenes of the film filmed during the Formula 1 racing weekends. This word of mouth should help “F1” to hold hard against “Jurassic World: Rebirth” during the weekend of the weekend July 4 with the continuous support of the IMAX.

The prospects are much less pink for “M3gan 2.0”, which is currently risking fourth opening this weekend behind the third weekend of his colleague “How to Train Your Dragon” and the second weekend of “Elio” from Disney / Pixar. His departure estimated at $ 10 million is only a third of the interior opening of $ 30.4 million from the first “M3GAN” in January 2023 and marked the eighth consecutive Liberation of Blumhouse to open at less than $ 12 million.

With a budget of 25 million dollars, “M3GAN 2.0” can still get out of the red, but it will not be the big successful suite Universal and Blumhouse hoped when he has brought back what is now as the last major original horror success of the latter in theaters.

With a large pivot of the horror comedy with action, many moviegoers do not come back for more from the Sassy Killer doll, although the only positive place is that the public reception is rather positive with a B + on Cinemascore and an audience score of 84% RT.
