This culminated in Joanne deciding that, despite her feelings for him, she was not ready to convert to Judaism. But don’t expect the couple to fall apart instantly. It’s a romantic comedy, after all. “The genre shouldn’t be designed to frustrate you,” Foster told EW in our Season 2 preview. “I think it can be eye-opening and not only be an unrealistic romance, but also not rob the audience of what’s happening to him.”

Foster, however, remains committed to exploring what happens after the kind of grand romantic gesture that ended Season 1. “The moment doesn’t end there. If you make a big decision, you have to deal with the consequences, so what does that look like?”

The season will also spend more time with the supporting cast, especially as their friend groups begin to merge. Joanne’s sister Morgan (Justine Lupe), in particular, will have a “big season.” Not only does she find her own romantic connection in a character played by her former Succession with Arian Moayed, but she also finds new textures in her relationship with Joanne.

“I really see this season as a love story between sisters, and I think it’s so beautiful,” Bell told EW.

Girls alums Jenni Konner and Bruce Eric Kaplan will take over as season 2 showrunners, replacing Foster, who will remain executive producer and writer.

“I didn’t want to change the show at all. I loved it,” Konner told EW. “The way I approach everything I work on, if I haven’t written it, is I need an incredibly clear, strong, unique voice and that’s Erin in a nutshell, so that immediately appealed to me. I was like, ‘It’s the same thing again!’
