Everton boss Moyes ‘likes players who fight’

David Moyes says Idrissa Gueye addressed his teammates in the dressing room after his bizarre sending off at Manchester United – and the Everton manager claims he ‘really likes’ his players to ‘fight and get angry’.

Gueye saw red in the 13th minute after being adjudged to have punched teammate Michael Keane in the face during an argument, with former United manager Moyes’ side then scoring the only goal of the game courtesy of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s finish from the edge of the area 16 minutes later.

“He apologized in the dressing room,” Moyes told Sky Sports after winning as opposition manager at Old Trafford for the first time at the 18th attempt.

“He incredibly praised the players for their performance and thanked them for it.”

Red card from Idrissa Gueye: Moyes questions the referee

Senegalese midfielder Gueye raised his hand towards defender Keane but the contact appeared minimal, leading Moyes to question referee Tony Harrington’s decision after Everton’s first win at United since 2013.

“I’m surprised,” Moyes said. “If [no punishment] If that had happened, I don’t think anyone in the stadium would have been surprised.

“The referee could have maybe taken a little more time to think about it – maybe just gone there, sorted it out and thought about it.

“There’s another side: I like my players to fight and get angry with each other because it was a bad ball or someone didn’t do the right thing.

“That’s part of it: if you want a winning team and the resilience and tenacity that got us the result, then you have to have players who are going to act that way.”

Dewsbury-Hall: Everton “fantastic” against Man United

Dewsbury-Hall, who scored Everton’s first goal at United since 2021, described Gueye’s dismissal as “just a moment of madness”.

“It was avoidable, but Idrissa apologized to all of us at full time and said his side,” added the £28 million signing from Chelsea in August.

“That’s all he can do and we move on. It’s probably made us grow even more as a team. [Moyes] he just said to me “look, it’s done, we’ll talk about it another time”.

“It was an up-and-down game. I’m going to sleep well tonight, to put it that way. I’m so happy for the guys, how hard they worked.

“It was a fantastic performance: it was just about pushing hard, achieving that goal, staying together and showing that spirit.”
