Eugenio Derbez, Mexican multihyphenate and president-co-founder of the 3PAS studios, not one but three events at the Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid, highlighting the impact of his work on the world scene.
In his opening speech on Thursday, he thought about his three decades in the biz, how he entered Hollywood with his first feature film “No instruction included” and how his business plans to navigate in rapidly evolving vision habits.
With his partner Ben Odell in 3pas studios, they now rotate to work with new digital formats to keep the lights on, but also plan to continue to make features and series, he said Variety.
He now looks at two possible projects to lead in English. “I gravitate towards the manufacture of a dramatic; one cannot really separate the comedy from the drama,” he said.
After “Instructions not included”, he recently directed the pilot and the last episode of the international series nominated at the Emmy Emmy of 3pas “They Come in Night” (“y llegaron de Noche”), a great success on the streaming platform of Televisauvision, Vix.
During his opening speech, he told how he learned of the hard time that his humor brand did not trace well beyond the borders of Mexico.
“Now, with streaming platforms, which distribute the whole world, we have to make shows with a wider universal appeal,” he said. But local stories could still work as long as they have resonated emotionally, he said, citing successes such as “Squid Game”, “Roma” and “Parasite”.
Navigating in the Biz in Hollywood meant reinventing itself to prevent being implemented in comic roles. By starting his own production company, he was able to do “radical”, which was put aside for 10 years until “Coda”, where he had a hinge support role, won an Oscar for the best film and opened doors for more dramatic roles.
“Comedy may be more difficult to do, but they are not appreciated,” he said, citing comics like Robin Williams who had to turn to drama to gain recognition to the Oscars.

Thinking about the advent of AI, he sees it as a double -edged sword. This can help facilitate the use of expensive VFX, but these emissions will not have the soul of those made by humans.
“They could be great, but AI does not obtain the same result as human intelligence, being able to see the whole and see the actor play,” he said.
He also presented what would be his dramatic first role in a series, the “The Trial” produced by 3 Pas (“El Juicio”), likely to start broadcasting on Prime Video by next year. He plays alongside “Money Heist”, Pedro Alonso’s head. The series of 8 episodes is based on a real case of sexual abuse, inspired by real events that took place in Mexico. The intrigue follows a young woman and her father in their fight for justice after having survived a sexual assault.

Derbez also presented season 5 of “Derbez Family Vacation” (by Viaje Con Los Derbez “), which, according to him, will not be the last.” Season 1 has almost broken our family, “he said Variety, “We were not sure how to sail in the format, but we have now established limits, and that worked very well.”
