Emma Thompson went from snowy landscapes to sunny pastures. The star plays a widowed fisherman who travels alone across northern snowy Minnesota and interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager, represented by Laurel Marsden (Mrs. Marvel), in his latest film, Winter deadDirected by Brian Kirk (21 bridges,, The day of the jackal,, Penny terrible). Friday, however, she discussed the film in Summery Locarno, Switzerland, during a press conference during the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival.
In the film, the character of Thompson faces a huge challenge. “Hours of the nearest city without telephone service, she realizes that she is the only hope of the girl,” said a synopsis.
“Why play in a thing of action when you are 66?! It’s just stupid,” Thompson told the press in Locarno on Friday, winning laughter.
The cold and action scenes meant that she was trying to prepare by being in the best possible physical form. “We spent a lot of time spending a lot of time getting used to colds” in Finland, “she also shared.
How were all action scenes? “The only thing that really scared me, really frightened me, was not to run, even if I pulled all the muscles from my body, but holding my breath underwater,” said Thompson.

Thompson added: “I think of her like someone who had a really full, rich and happy life. And that was one of the things I liked the most. We seem to tell a lot of stories about super-rich, we seem to watch a lot of darkering human nature, and also television.”
Her daughter Gaia Wise, who plays the younger version of Thompson’s character in the film, said that she liked to bring to life “what she saw and the trauma she goes through, and seeing how, she becomes this woman who is capable and capable and willing to sacrifice”.
Written by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb, the film also features Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, the daughter of Thompson Gaia Wise, Lloyd Hutchinson and Brían F. O’Byrne. Thompson is also an executive producer.
Leeb said the heroine was inspired by his aunt, with Kirk recalling that when he read the scenario, he loved this “fully formed character” who was “not a superhero” but a person “out of his depth”.

Thompson is also in Locarno to receive the Leopard Club Award on the picturesque Pitory Piazza Grande Square from the Swiss city on Friday evening, before the world first of the film.
“She is the only person in the history of the Oscars to have won for the theater and the script,” said the organizers of Locarno about the British star to reveal that she would receive the honor. “Thompson’s desire to take risks with his roles has indicated that she has remained a vital force on stage and on the screen for four decades, a testimony of the depth of affection, several generations of fans hold for her.”
