Emma Thompson and Judy Greer are among the actors of the most versatile character and the most capable of their respective generations. You may have concepts about them when you hear their names, but they have undeniably built incredible careers to never stay motionless and always make their next step the thriller in front of their last. It is therefore quite remarkable that although they have embodied just about all the characters you could imagine, he always has the impression that they both play to type Brian Kirk‘s Winter death. They play two very different but very real women who cross under the most loaded and unexpected circumstances, and find themselves to death. He can technically be considered an action film (even if I would define it more as a thriller), but do not be deceived by thinking that Thompson suddenly gets his turn Liam Neeson-Style Twilight Years Action Hero Relover. What is so pleasant in her character here is that she is just an ordinary woman, and when the danger arrives is her ingenuity, her wisdom and her computer that advances her.
What is “winter death” about?
Emma Thompson is Barb, although we only see it in the last minutes because there is no one in this story who knows her well enough to call her by name. She is a widow living in a small trailer in the frozen desert, and one day she heads for a blizzard to go fishing in an isolated lake. Time is intensifying and along the way, she stops in a cabin to ask for directions. There she surprises a strange and devious man (Marc Menchaca), which does not seem particularly happy to see it. There is blood in the snow, but she accepts her explanation of hunting and continues her happy path. She arrives at the lake and, during fishing, recalls her late husband Karl and the wonderful moments they had at this place even in the decades. Then suddenly, she hears gunshots, and A young woman runs for her life in the clearing, only to be accosted and dragged again by this same devious man.
This throws Barb in a completely unexpected rescue missionAnd while she is going to dig to try to help the young woman, she realizes that there is more in this abduction. Judy Greer swings like Shifty’s man (apologies for the lack of names, but the film does not give it. Greer is credited like a Violette and Menchaca woman like a Camo jacket), obviously the orchestrator of violence, and when she realizes that an old woman tries to release their captivity, she launches through the flood to prevent it. Over the film, the reasons for all this are revealed, and they are certainly convincing. We do not lack removal thrillers, therefore captivating performance and solid reasons for the removal are essential to bring out a film – Winter death gives us all that precedes.
“ Dead of Winter ” offers a theater gold trio
It can be versatile, but it is rarely, if ever, that we have seen Thompson venture further than its English origins. Here she plays a lot of an American in the vein of a Kathy Bates Or Frances McDormand Character – Marge of Fargo comes to mind. She is a simple country woman, full of jokes and good intentions, and may not realize that she can be irritating in her sweetness and simplicity. She almost certainly thinks nothing special, and in the Thriller genre, she is not. She does not have a basement full of firearms, nor years of military training, or everything that would indicate that it is a hard to cook. She is only a woman with decades of experience in life, nature and people. These are the tools of its arsenal, and it does not think twice when the opportunity calls it to use them.
Greer, on the other hand, is the opposite. She is intense, erratic and full of anger, but only wants to save her own life. The problem is that the only way she can think about doing it is very risky and very illegal, and Barb finds herself finding herself in the middle, so she must be killed. Between them is the clever man who is quite pitiful, who ends up being far from being as bad as it seems. Menchaca plays him with a beautiful range, and once the tables are lit on him, he becomes a poor and pathetic thing that you feel really sorry. The actor even makes a scene where he walks naked in the snow, and you cannot help but admire the whole gang for what they had to endure on the set. It is not The abyssBut that had to be physically and mentally uncomfortable, and each of them transforms truly impressive performance. Sometimes you see an actor at work, and you remember how difficult it is to ensure that the unreal feels real. Thompson, Greer and Menchaca give us three real people, taken in a difficult battle, all with their own fears and motifsAnd it is a lot on their credit and that of writers Nicholas Jacobson-Larson And Including barThat it is never as simple as good and bad guys. You understand what each of them wants of this whole desolate situation, and everyone is justified who wants.
“ Dead of Winter ” is a audacious and captivating wild thriller
In such an image and such a period concerned with beauty, it is daring and refreshing to see actors, especially women, who are ready to dominate the screen without being a thumb of their lives. Greer’s character is sick and she looks at him. The character of Thompson is old and spent his life in living in the middle of nowhere, and she looks at him. Menchaca is dying slowly and he looks at him. There is blood, sweat, tears, morve, wrinkles, cries and swollen eyes, and it is with all these elements that reality is mentioned. It is difficult to really connect with a room that is too perfect, because this feeling of unreality brings you out of your world. You will see it in vintage pieces: people’s teeth are too straight and white, their complexion too clear, their characteristics too modern to believe. The action thrillers often fall into the same trap because, hey, who will look at if the characters are not chiselled, in a way, of the abercroombie and fitch models strictly razed, despite their hard environment?! By kissing the dirty, unfair and imperfect aesthetic of history, the film invites you to its reality and really allows you to settle in its world.
It is not an uncharted lawn for director Brian Kirk, who notably produced three of the best episodes of Game of Thrones in his first season. This should tell you a lot about its ability to create an atmosphere with nature resources and to withdraw stellar performance from talented actors. From the slightly steep approach of Thompson, which could be due to age, cold, to its inflated snow combination or to a combination of the three, to the frantic rage of Greer to the injustice of all this, Kirk really allows these actors to take the material on the length they consider good, and it works. Almost every turn, the action avoids the usual traps that such configurations meet and ends with an unexpected note which is both tragic and quite comforting. It is a captivating thriller that rolls you up with its non-conventionality and offers something different in a largely uniform genre.
