Elon Musk extinguishes American liberals not only Tesla but also electric vehicles in general | Electric, hybrid and low -emission cars

The American liberals have become so disgusted from Tesla from the right turn of Elon Musk that they are now not only much less likely to buy the car brand, but also less willing to buy any type of electric car, revealed new research.

Tesla’s popularity among Liberal Americans has dropped since Musk, Tesla’s general manager and the richest person in the world, combined with Donald Trump and helped to propel the president to electoral victory last year.

While the Liberals reported mainly positive intentions concerning the purchase of an electric car in August 2023, their overall support for electric vehicles was eroded in the wake of a collapse in their opinion on Teslas, according to the new study, which questioned the Americans on a range of environmental actions.

According to the latest survey, taken in March while Musk exhausted the federal workforce in his role as Trump’s main adviser after giving what seemed to be a Nazi salute, the intention to buy an EV from the liberals slipped into a negative territory.

“The suspicion is that Elon Musk has become so synonymous with electric vehicles in the United States according to which the perceptions of him affected the whole class of vehicles,” said Alexandra Flores, psychologist at Williams College and the main study of the study, published in Nature.

“It made them much less attractive to the Liberals – he really led to the perceptions of electric vehicles in general. It is certainly unusual to have a general manager to have an impact on a whole class of products like this.”

The opposition to Musk on his alliance with Trump, who has since broken up on acrimony, has expressed Liberal owners in Tesla in the United States and Europe to express to its vehicles. Some even adorned their cars with anti-MUSC stickers which have slogans such as “Anti Elon Tesla Club” or “I bought this before Elon went crazy”.

However, the new study revealed that the right -of -right quarter of Musk did not make conservative Americans more likely to buy an Tesla or an electric car, despite a separate survey showing that republican voters now have a more favorable vision of the automotive company than before. Opinions on musk are also strongly divided between conservatives and liberals.

Even if the Liberals have radically changed their Tesla opinions and, to a lesser extent, electric vehicles, most of the preservatives remain skeptical about the two and are not constantly unstopped to consider buying an electric car during the last two years of survey.

Although the purchase of an electric vehicle is the most politically polarized environmental action when the researchers’ survey started, more than the installation of solar panels or even eating less red meat, Democrats and Republicans are now more in line than they followed by Musk’s political foray.

“We thought that the liberals would be quite stable because electric vehicles are so historically associated with the green movement and the turn to the right of Musk would bring the conservatives on board,” said Flores.

“But the reverse occurred – over time, the preservatives remained relatively stable in their lack of interest in electric vehicles and Tesla, while the attitudes of the liberals have really dropped. They are now also unlikely to buy an electric vehicle because they are Tesla.”

Flores said that the association of electric vehicles with the respectful climate policy could be more influential for the conservatives than the liberals in terms of purchase of decisions. “The attitude among the conservatives towards Tesla can be slightly less negative than before, but that has not resulted in the part of psychology of the way they intended to behave,” she said. “This strong link with liberalism is too much for them to be moved. It is more fundamental for them than if they like or do not like Elon Musk.”

Musk recently admitted that Tesla faces a “few quarters” to come in the midst of stuttering sales figures for the company in the United States. Last week, Tesla announced that sales for the second quarter of 2025 were lowered by 12% over the same period last year, in the midst of consumer concerns concerning prices, the Tesla range and the imminent abolition of tax credits, as well as the image of Musk.

In California, the heart of Tesla, the situation is particularly austere, the company displaying a seventh consecutive quarter of decrease in new vehicle recordings.

In the United States, overall sales of electric vehicles fell in the three months to July, in annual shift, and the transition to electric models should be slowed down by a republican expenditure bill, signed by Trump, which ax a key incentive for buyers to opt for an EV. From September, a tax credit up to $ 7,500 for a purchase of an electric car will be deleted, the dealerships expecting a rush of people to benefit from the subsidy before its expiration.

“You cannot deny that there are people who say that they do not buy a Tesla, but the figures of the company are not too surprising,” said Erin Keating, executive analyst at Cox Automotive. “They have had two major products that are major sellers, they have not changed them for years and there is now a large influx of new and more exciting electrical products.

“I am not sure that you can assign a drop in sales of electric vehicles to Elon, maybe being on both sides of the medal will release electric vehicles to be a political lightning rod,” said Keating, adding that the total market share for electric vehicles may not break 10% this year, as planned previously.

“The removal of tax credits can slow things down, this will harm consumers’ perception as to whether they can afford an electric vehicle or not,” she said. “But electric vehicles do not disappear – adoption can stagnate, but it is not going on a cliff. We have invested too much and there are too many good products on the market now.”

Transport is the greatest contributor to planet’s pollution in the United States and any slowdown in the adoption of the EV would hinder attempts to combat the climate crisis.

“One of the most disturbing implications of our study is what it means for the climate,” said Flores. “It is possible, however, that the shadow of Musk on electric vehicles begins to fade, even if opinions on Tesla are not recovered. This pride of driving a friendly vehicle can bounce among the liberals.”
