Although 10 candidates ran for Cameroon’s highest office, Biya, who has never lost an election, was considered a favorite.
This did not prevent the opposition candidate and former minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, from declaring himself the winner before the announcement of the final results.
In a recent BBC interview, he insisted on his victory in the polls against Biya, his former boss.
He and his supporters accuse the president of electoral fraud and gross irregularities.
Additionally, growing frustrations have sparked nationwide protests, which have so far left at least four people dead, according to authorities.
Most demonstrators supported Tchiroma Bakary’s claim of victory. The government declared the protests illegal and police subsequently arrested several opposition leaders and activists.
Following the protests, analysts warned that Cameroon, a once peaceful country, could descend into political turmoil if election results did not reflect the will of the people.
