Dwayne Johnson’s $300M ‘Die Hard’ Dupe Leaves Netflix

It seems strange to look back on the fantastic box office success Dwayne Johnson only a few years ago, and I wonder how he found himself in such a predicament today. The actor headlined a string of major hits, which ran their course just before 2020, with the film Jumanji: The Next Level. By this time, Johnson had established himself as one of the highest-paid movie stars in the world. One of his last original hits was Skyscraperwhich did quite well at the box office, but was not as successful as Johnson’s previous films such as Carnage And San Andreas. The film is currently available to stream on Netflix, but not for long, as that will leave the streamer in the UK and some other countries on January 9.
Released in 2018, Skyscraper grossed just over $300 million at the worldwide box office, compared to reported budget of approximately $130 million. The film was released at a particularly favorable time for Hollywood films in China. Skyscraper takes place in Hong Kong, where Johnson’s character and his family find themselves in peril when a group of terrorists infiltrate the titular facility, forcing him to use his special skills to save the day. THE the film received mixed reviewsand now achieves a score of 48% on aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads: “Well broadcast but derivative, Skyscraper isn’t exactly a towering action thriller feat, but it’s solidly constructed enough to be among the genre’s most mildly entertaining features. The film has been compared unfavorably to past action classics such as The imposing hell And Die hard.
The Rock looks to mix things up in the future
Johnson went on to star in a trio of big-budget box office flops – Jungle cruise, Black AdamAnd Red. After his major plans to restructure the now-defunct DC Extended Universe franchise failed, he made the decision to downsize and star in Benny Safdiesports drama The smashing machine. The film enjoyed mostly positive reviews and terrible box office results a few months ago, grossing only $20 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. Johnson will also star in Safdie’s next film, but said he will return to acting as well. Jumanji And Fast and Furious franchise.
