12 years later, Tom Cruise’s neglected sci-fi epic explodes on streaming

2025 was a big year for Tom Cruisewhich closed the final chapter of its Mission: Impossible franchise with another blockbuster blockbuster. However, more than 10 years ago, he starred in an overlooked and underrated sci-fi thriller that proved his streaming doubters wrong. In 2013, Cruise partnered with Morgan Freeman And Game of Thrones veteran Nikolaj Coster-Waldau For Oversightthe sci-fi epic following the arrival of an alien who triggers a battle to save all humanity. Oversight is streaming on Netflix in Americabut globally, the film is in the top 10 on HBO Max in over 15 countries as of this writing.

Oversight had a reported budget of $120 million for Universal Pictures, and the studio would certainly have liked to see the film gross more than $286 million at the worldwide box office. This is enough to avoid being called a failure, but it is barely enough to cover its break-even point when taking into account marketing costs. Oversight also received poor reviews from critics and mediocre ratings from fans, leading it to ratings of 53% and 61% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also stars Olga Kurylenko (Black widow) opposite Cruise in the role of Julia.

Oversight is based on Joseph Kosinskithe history of the graphic novel, and he tapped Karl Gajdušek And Michael Arndt to write the film’s script, but he retained control as director. Cruise and Kosinski reunited a few years ago to Top Gun: Maverickthe gargantuan action blockbuster that ended its run as one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Kosinski returned to the big screen earlier this year with F1: The movieTHE Brad Pitt-directed racing blockbuster which features the action of Top Gun: Maverick from the sky and on the track.
