Driver crashes into tree on Chicago’s West Side after suspected carjacking

A driver was pronounced dead Tuesday evening after a carjacked SUV crashed into a tree in the Garfield Park neighborhood.

Chicago police said that shortly before 11:30 p.m., officers responded to a crash in the 2800 block of West Van Buren Street, where a westbound SUV jumped a curb and struck a tree. A driver was found unconscious inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed the silver SUV was stolen during a carjacking around 11:20 p.m. in the 4200 block of South Artesian Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood.

Detectives were investigating.
