However, what unfolded on the first day turned into a stunning display of bowling dominance and statistical rarity.Assam, led by Riyan Parag, opted to bat first after winning the toss, but soon found themselves in chaos. Left-arm spinner Arjun Sharma struck first, dismissing Parag, wicketkeeper Sumit Ghadigaonkar and Sibsankar Roy in successive deliveries to complete the first hat-trick of the season and leave Assam reeling at 45 for five. After lunch, the hosts’ woes worsened when left-arm pacer Mohit Jangra produced a sensational blast to register the second hat-trick of the innings. He removed opener Pradyun Saikia – who top-scored with a quick 52 off 42 balls – followed by Mukhtar Hussain and Bhargab Lakhar, completing his maiden first-class hat-trick. Arjun then finished the innings with figures of 5 for 46 as Assam were bowled out for just 103 in 17.3 overs. The rare feat marks the first time in the history of the Ranji Trophy that two bowlers have taken hat-tricks in the same innings. The only comparable example was in 1963, when Services’ Joginder Singh Rao scored two hat-tricks in a single innings against North Punjab at Amritsar – a record which still stands unmatched in Indian first-class cricket. The drama did not end there. Assam skipper Riyan Parag responded with a fiery spell, taking five wickets – including three from four balls – as Services struggled to respond. Both teams traded hat-trick chances and quick wickets, with the match producing 20 dismissals in less than 47 overs before Tea.It was a day of pure chaos, history and unforgettable cricket at Tinsukia.
