DOOMSDAY Star Channing Tatum Talks Recalling Gambit’s Accent and Shares His Reaction to the Script

Avengers: Apocalypse will feature the original X-Men returning to the big screen, but with a notable addition in Channing Tatum’s Gambit. The actor was approached to play Rémy LeBeau more than ten years ago, but only had the opportunity to do so last summer. Deadpool and Wolverine.

Although he’s a largely comedic character in this film, Gambit is expected to get serious when he lines up with Professor X, Magneto, Cyclops, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Mystique to fight the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.

Unsurprisingly, this will involve toning down the mutant’s Cajun accent. “It’s always an interesting negotiation” he told PEOPLE. “When you go down to Lafayette, where most of the Cajuns and Cajun culture are, there’s a huge spectrum of Cajun. It’s huge.”

“And so I have to interpret what I have to convey in the scene,” Tatum continued. “And I have to make sure, ‘Is this line for a joke, and can I really Cajun this one? Or is this line for a plot, and do I need to be really clear but still have a Cajun accent?'”

Recognizing that it is “always a bit of back and forth”, THE Roofer the star said that Avengers: Apocalypse directors Joe and Anthony Russo “I love their comedy and that will always be there too.” Anyway, “It’s definitely going to be a dramatic film.”

Tease him “on a large scale” of the next film, Tatum added, “I think they’ve really prepared themselves for a very difficult bar to reach. I think they’ve really prepared themselves for a very difficult bar to reach. Every movie they make is the next one that has to surpass it.”

“When I read the script, I was like, ‘What?!’ I don’t think anyone is going to really understand how they did that.” » he enthused. “This is going to melt everyone’s brains again.”

The hope is that Avengers: Apocalypse will add Jean Grey, Storm and Wolverine to this X-Men team. If that’s the plan, then Marvel Studios is either keeping its casting a surprise or planning to shoot scenes with these actors during reshoots.

From his hair to the suit he wore and, most importantly, that Cajun accent, Tatum gave it his all to do well with Gambit in Deadpool and Wolverine. It will be interesting to see what it looks like when it returns to the comedy and gets serious, especially since the stakes are shaping up to be incredibly high in Avengers: Apocalypse. After all, Doom is coming.

Avengers: Apocalypse is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars expected to arrive on December 17, 2027.
