Donald Trump puts pressure on the return of “Redskins” and “Indians” team names
President Donald Trump went to social networks Sunday morning, campaigning for Washington commanders and Cleveland Guardians to return to their old team names.
“Washington’s” Whatvers “should immediately change their name in the Washington Redskins football team,” wrote Trump in an article on Truth Social. “There is a big complaint for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a legendary past.”
There are not six original teams from the Major Baseball League, and the Cleveland Professional Baseball Organization had several nicknames before the nickname of the Indians in the early 1900s.
In the post, Trump continued: “Our great Indians, in massive numbers, want this to happen.”
The president of the guards, Chris Antonetti, quickly swept away the speculation triggered by Trump.
“I understand that there are very different perspectives on the decision we made a few years ago, but this is a decision that we have made and we have had the opportunity to build the brand as Guardians in the past four years, and we are delighted with the future before us,” said Antonetti.
He did not completely release and said that the name will never change, however. The property of Cleveland baseball should change hands in a few seasons, because David Blitzer should become the majority of the stakeholders of the club by 2028.
Commanders did not publish a declaration.
The Redskins changed names in the Washington football team in 2020 and 2021 before adopting the commanders in 2022.
After public pressure, the Guardians abandoned the controversial logo of Chef Wahoo in 2018. Cleveland was rewarded with the 2019 MLB star match. It did not take long for changes to follow, because the club completely abandoned the name of the Indians in 2021, by unfolding the uniforms of the goalkeepers, the hats and the signaling of the stadium.
Commanders, who were sold by Dan Snyder and acquired by Josh Harris in 2023, are obtaining a site for their $ 4 billion stadium offered on the old site of the RFK stadium.
The federal government has threatened to intervene in these negotiations, and online speculations have already percolated that Trump could hold this site hostage, giving Harris an ultimatum to change the name Redskins in exchange for authorization to build a new dome.
It is difficult to imagine a world where commanders and guards could try to put this toothpaste in the tube. They torn off the dressings, upsetting older and traditional fans with their name changes during the social disorders of the world pandemic. It would be extremely difficult to recover these changes now.
