The best way to tackle brittle nails is to keep them dry, to use hands protection when working with chemicals and household cleaners and to easily go to manicures, explains the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology (AOCD).

Nutritional deficiencies rarely cause brittle and penetrating nails, explains the AOCD. However, eating a healthy and balanced diet can help stimulate overall nail health.
It is important to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and quality fat sources to obtain the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that the body needs to operate optimally.
Carbohydrates, healthy fats, iron, proteins and vitamins A, D and E are particularly useful for nail health, notes the Mayo Clinic health system.
Although gelatin contains certain proteins, foods such as fish, nuts, seeds and eggs do more efficient work to provide high quality proteins alongside additional nutrients necessary for healthy nails.
