The Premier League launches the initiative “Together against suicide”
The Premier League has launched today “together against suicide”, a new initiative to support fans affected by suicide or suicidal thoughts, helping to make information and expertise at the disposal of those who need it.
“ Together against suicide ” is supported by Leeds United and all the other Premier League clubs and was created with charitable works of prevention of Samaritan suicide, which provide people in the United Kingdom free emotional support 24/7. Recent data show that someone in the United Kingdom is followed every 90 minutes, and one in four people had suicidal thoughts.
The initiative is launched on World Suicide Day, with an online center created which includes information on the signs and symptoms that people can seek if they are concerned about the way they or someone else feel. The HUB offers assistance and reference information to national and international services. Visit Premierleleague.com/Togetheragainstsuicide for more information.
The director general of the Premier League, Richard Masters, said: “Unfortunately, suicide is a problem that affects people of all ages from all walks of life. We believe that football can play a vital role in reducing stigmatization around it and the connection of fans that experience suicidal thoughts with the support they need.
“By working with clubs and partners to develop” together against suicide “, we want fans to understand that they do not have to face their problems alone.
“There are many ways for people to have the conversations that may have a positive impact on their mental well-being, whether by using the match services that are launched by clubs this weekend, speaking to family and friends or by contacting Samaritans or other experts in this field for confidential advice.
“It is a question of using the power of football to help save lives and we urge fans to take care of themselves and those who are close to their hearts.”
As part of the initiative, the Samaritans will provide training to the club staff to ensure that they feel equipped and supported to direct suicide prevention activities with fans. The League also finances subscriptions to the club in R; PPLE, a digital tool that discreetly intercepts harmful online searches and signaling users for free 24/7 mental support support.
The initiative “Together against suicide” will be visible to all Premier League matches this weekend, helping to raise awareness of the help of a global audience.
Samaritans’ latest survey data reveals that 60% of people have had their suicidal thoughts interrupted by a person close to them, such as a friend or family member, demonstrating the importance of taking the time to speak to others who, in your opinion, could have difficulties.
Julie Bentley, Director General of Samaritans, said: “One in four of us experiences suicidal thoughts, but suicide is not inevitable. Suicidal thoughts can be interrupted and a moment of human connection can be everything you need to save a life. Our volunteers respond to a call for help every 10 seconds, but we cannot prevent suicide alone – we are all in the same team and everyone has a role to play.
“Together against suicide is an incredible opportunity to reach thousands of people with the important message that it is normal to speak more openly about suicide. By attacking societal stigmatization and by creating more sources of support for those in crisis, this initiative will help us save lives.”
