Dexter Reed Death: CPD officers will not face accusations in the deadly shooting of Chicago, Cook County his Eileen O’Neill Burke says

Chicago (WLS) – No accusation will be filed against the police officers involved in Dexter Reed’s ball death, said lawyer for Cook’s county.

“This decision is not taken lightly and does not decrease the tragedy that occurred,” said the state prosecutor of Cook on Wednesday.

In March 2024, Reed was killed during a confrontation with Chicago police in East Garfield Park, following a traffic stop for an alleged violation of the seat belt.

The medical examiner said that Reed had been killed 13 times. Reed died at MT. Sinai hospital.

Reed was arrested for a violation of the seat belt, said COPA. The traffic stop ended with the Reed SUV filled with at least a dozen ball holes.

Five Chicago police officers were involved in the deadly West Side shooting, the civilian police responsibility for the police said.

Copa said that, in the video, Reed seems to open fire first on a standing officer on the front passenger side. Four other officers, all members of a CPD tactical team, turn fire, pulling, according to COPA, 96 shots in 41 seconds.

While the first results of the COPA report that Reed first fired, demonstrations followed the release of the images of the body camera, as well as calls to the officers involved to revoke their police powers as the investigation continues.
