Derek Jeter applauds as Dodgers’ Dave Roberts rips Yankees legend with World Series reference

The MLB Championship Series is underway, with four teams competing for a coveted chance at World Series glory.
In the first match of a best of seven National League Championship Series (NLCS), the Milwaukee Brewers hosted the defending champions Los Angeles The Dodgers.

After a 2-1 victory to take home lead in the series opener, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke with Fox Sports: MLB team with five-time World Series champion with the new York Derek Jeter, Yankees and Baseball Hall of Famer.
There, Roberts — who has been the Dodgers’ manager since 2016 — took a playful look at the 14-time MLB All-Star and 2003 Yankees team.
“I don’t want to bring up old wounds with Derek, which I kind of do, because the guy has braces to cover his whole hand,” Roberts said.
“It’s like what the Marlins did to the Yankees back in the day. The banners, stealing the bases.
“So this team revels in momentum and havoc and small ball, and kind of tries to disrupt the timing.”
Roberts was of course referring to the 2003 World Series between the Yankees and the Florida Marlins (now the Miami Marlins), whose style of play in that series he compared to that of the Brewers in the 2025 postseason.
“Hey Dave! First of all, I don’t like it,” Jeter responded. “This is the last time I talk to you in October, so good luck!”
The Marlins ended up winning that series 4-2 and clinched just their second World Series title in their franchise’s history, although they were outscored 21-17 by the Yankees in all six contests.
Roberts and the Dodgers aren’t buying the Brewers’ narrative
Roberts continued to discuss how the Dodgers plan to attack the Brewers in this series, and also took a not-so-subtle dig at Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy.
“We just have to stay true to our game, attack these guys, play fundamental baseball,” Roberts said. “This whole narrative that Murph is trying to start, that they are the little engine.

“This team has won the most games in baseball, so we’re not buying that. We’ve got to go out there and play good baseball and have the best team win.”
Before the start of the series, Murphy spoke to the media on Monday, where he appeared to play mind games with the opposition.
“I’m sure most Dodgers players can’t name eight guys on our roster,” Murphy joked. “No offense to them, they shouldn’t have to know the names, but these are guys who will hopefully know their names by the end.”
Earlier in the postseason, Murphy referred to his team as the “Average Joes,” with right fielder Christian Yelich probably being their best-known star.
However, this team also had the best record in all of baseball, finishing the regular season with a 97-65 winning record.
Not only did the Brewers have home-field advantage, but after meeting six times in the regular season, they had regained their confidence and mental edge after sweeping their opponents 6-0.

But October baseball is a whole different ball game.
In a low-scoring affair featuring exceptional pitching from the Brewers bullpen and the Dodgers’ Blake Snell, it was Los Angeles’ star power that prevailed.
Snell recorded just one hit in eight innings and made history by becoming the first MLB pitcher to face the minimum in eight innings of a postseason outing since Don Larsen in his perfect game in 1956.
Freddie Freeman hit a solo homer in the sixth inning, with Max Muncy adding an insurance run on a loaded walk in the ninth.
That proved crucial, as the Brewers rallied late on closer Roki Sasaki and loaded the bases with two outs, before 37-year-old veteran Blake Treinen entered the game to get the final out, striking out Brice Turang to clinch a 1-0 series lead for the Dodgers on the road.
Now all attention turns to Game 2 which will take place on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, the Seattle Mariners took a 2-0 series lead. Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
