Dembélé and Hakimi injured in 2-1 UCL defeat to Bayern

PSG had a tough night in the Champions League as Bayern Munich maintained their superb start, and there was even more frustration for Juventus.

Holders Paris Saint-Germain suffered their first Champions League defeat this season and saw Ousmane Dembélé and Achraf Hakimi pick up injuries in the first half after being beaten 2-1 by Bayern Munich at the Parc des Princes.

PSG had made a perfect start to defending their title with three wins from three, including a thrilling win at Barcelona.

But a rematch of the 2020 final turned into a nightmare for Luis Enrique’s men.

Diaz damages PSG

PSG fell behind in the fourth minute when Luis Diaz fired in the rebound after Lucas Chevalier had pushed away Michael Olise’s initial effort.

Dembele looked to have equalized in the 22nd minute, only to see his goal ruled out by VAR for offside, and three minutes later the Ballon d’Or winner limped down the tunnel as his evening ended prematurely.

Diaz then capitalized on an uncharacteristic error from Marquinhos to make it 2-0, but the Colombian’s eventful evening ended in first-half stoppage time when he was sent off for a terrible challenge on Hakimi which led to the Moroccan right-back being withdrawn.

PSG pulled one back in the second half through Joao Neves but could not complete the recovery effort.

Bayern leads the table with four wins out of four in the league stage. They have won all 16 of their games this season. Arsenal are level with them on 12 points after beating Slavia Prague 3-0, while Liverpool are three points behind after their 1-0 defeat to Real Madrid. Tottenham are four points behind the leaders, having remained unbeaten in the competition thanks to a 4-0 defeat to Copenhagen.

Juventus remains winless

Juventus have enjoyed some of the most entertaining matches of the tournament so far, but remain winless after a 1-1 draw against Sporting Lisbon in Luciano Spalletti’s second game in charge.

Maximiliano Araújo fired off the post to cap off a superb team move that gave Sporting an early lead, but Dusan Vlahovic’s goal just past the post leveled things up.

It’s three draws and one defeat in four matches for Juve, who are now five matches without a win in this competition since last season. The streak marks the longest run since Juve went six without a win between April and November 2013.

Spalletti, however, was encouraged by what he witnessed.

“We had a complicated start, then this great reaction, we took control of the match and deserved to take the lead, creating three or four good chances,” Spalletti told Sky Sport Italia.

“At the beginning we lost the ball too cheaply, we weren’t clean enough in our passes, we struggled under pressure, but in general after that the team played well.

“We took the ball from them and were a little too frantic in our choices at times, giving the ball back after we won it. We had to get it back tooth and nail, when we were giving it back to them too easily.

“I still believe this is a strong team, I am convinced that if we continue in this spirit we will win many games.”

Atletico Madrid won comfortably 3-1 against Union Saint-Gilloise thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher and Marcos Llorente, while Folarin Balogun’s finish from a tight angle proved enough for Monaco to beat 10-man Bodo/Glimt 1-0.

Napoli were held to a 0-0 draw by Eintracht Frankfurt, and there was another draw at Piraeus, where Ricardo Pepi scored in the 93rd minute to give PSV Eindhoven a 1-1 draw at Olympiacos, who are still awaiting their first victory.
