He sent a declaration on his decision.
“After 23 years to play football, I officially retire the NFL,” he said. “Football gave me more than what I could have imagined. Objective, discipline, brotherhood and platform to have an impact on others. But the most important thing, it showed me who I am outside the game. I leave this chapter with a deep gratitude for each lesson, the challenge and the victory. I am proud of what I have accomplished on the field, but even more proud of the man than I became because of that.”
Hicks continued his message, thanking his teammates, fans and family for helping him throughout his career.
“To my teammates, coaches, fans and especially my family. Thank you for your unwavering support throughout this trip. I can’t wait to see this next season of life and everything that brings. I was retiring with peace knowing that I gave football all that I had, and that the best remains to come.”
Hicks was a key element in Cleveland’s defense last season. He played in 12 games, accumulating 78 plated, two bags and four defended passes. This season, he had to compete for the right to start.

At 33, Hicks will end his NFL career after playing in 134 games. Throughout these 134 appearances, he accumulated 951 plated in total, 16.5 bags, six forced escapes, 11 escaped recovery, 13 interceptions, a defensive touch and 53 defended passes.
Losing Hicks so late in the offseason is a blow for the Browns. His field capacities and his veteran leadership would have been very precious for the team during the 2025 season.
Despite this, he has set up a career of which he should be proud and will receive a lot of goods when leaving the NFL.
