Decision time for Sunderland

“It’s incredible what they have accomplished,” said Hinchcliffe. “They stayed at a philosophy: developing young talents, building reasonably, and that brought them success. But now comes a big decision. Stay with this plan, or do they go big to try to stay in the Premier League?

“Teams like Leeds and Burnley were probably better prepared. On paper, Sunderland may not be very lucky with their current team. But they now have this financial boost of the promotion, which could put them in a strong position even if they come back down.

“Their summer will be critical. It seems that Bellingham and Tommy Watson are coming out.

Weaver added: “Sunderland will always have significant costs. They have to come money, of course, but there are also bonuses and additional modules that they owe to other clubs for the players they have already signed.
