DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE Director Shawn Levy Shares Disappointing Update on Planned REAL STEEL Revival

It was at the beginning of 2021 that we first learned of the plans for Deadpool and Wolverine And Star Wars: Starfighter director Shawn Levy returns to the world of Real steel for a new Disney+ series.

The 2011 film starred Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly and Anthony Mackie, and followed a father and son who reconcile after years of separation as they train a junkyard robot to become a boxing champion.

The film grossed just under $300 million upon release, and given that its budget was only $110 million, it was difficult to understand how a big screen sequel never happened. However, its status as a beloved classic and increased interest after Netflix’s debut seemed to have convinced Disney that it was a property worth restoring. Or not.

Collider (via SFFGazette.com) recently caught up with Levy and asked him where things stand with the project. "I have to thank you, Frosty, because you’re tenacious," » replied the filmmaker. “I feel like we’re going to be old men, and you’re still going to ask me about Real Steel, which I love you for.”

“The status is unclear, and boy, I wish I felt this was more likely to happen than I currently think,” he added, a stark contrast to last year when he suggested the writers were ready to step into the ring.

“It’s a difficult thing because the film is so beloved out of proportion to its box office performance,” » continued Lévy. “And I just don’t want to touch Real Steel unless I know I’m doing it justice, whether it’s a sequel or a TV show.”

“At the moment, I would say to be determined” he admitted. “But I wouldn’t say probably, and I’m sorry to admit it. But I’m protecting what is at least a pure love that we all share for this original film.”

Since he was at the helm Real steelLevy continued to work on projects like Stranger Things And Free guy. Fans never stopped sharing their hopes for a sequel, and the filmmaker later revealed that it was this newfound interest in Netflix that prompted him to talk with Jackman about some sort of sequel.

Regardless, fans were excited about where the Real steel the franchise could be heading towards this revival. There’s a lot of potential with the property, and whether it’s a continuation or a new story set in this world, Disney would have made a lot of fans very happy by revisiting this relatively obscure Fox film.

For now, the franchise remains on shelves, and based on Levy’s latest update, that’s where it will stay. As always, let us know your thoughts on this news in the comments section.
