DC United Name René Weiler as a chief coach

DC United named René Weiler as his new head coach on Wednesday, six days after dismissed Troy Lesesne.
Weiler, 51, has managed clubs from his native Swiss as well as Germany, Belgium, Egypt and Japan since 2009.
More recently, he guided the Swiss Super League Side Servette FC as a Swiss Cup in 2024. He took over as a sports director of the club in June 2024.
“René is a tactician with a proven capacity to implement a clear and disciplined style of play, and to adapt this system to get the best of his players out,” said DC chief director and football officer Ally Mackay in a press release. “He builds organized, aggressive teams outside the possession and worn workers. This style reflects the identity we work to establish at DC United.
“His experience in talent development and by demanding high standards makes him the ideal leader to guide this project. We are delighted to welcome him to the club and fully support his vision of what this team can become.”

Weiler teams won six titles, including the Belgian Pro League 2016-2017 with Anderlecht and the 2019-20 Egyptian League with Al Ahly.
“This is a club with a proud story and a passionate fans base, and I firmly believe in the project that takes shape here,” said Weiler. “The foundation that has been put in place gives me real confidence in what we can build.
“There is an important work to come, but I am delighted to help bring DC United back to the place where it belongs, in competition for the championships.”
Currently 13th in the Eastern Conference, the Black-And-Red may miss the MLS Cup qualifiers for a sixth consecutive season.
Lesesne compiled a record of 18-26-17 in all competitions before being dismissed on July 10. The director of the academy, Kevin Flanagan, was acting coach.
