DC Studios’ Lanterns postponed to summer 2026 at HBO

DC Studios’ “Lanterns” plans to debut in late summer 2026 on HBO and HBO Max, CEO Casey Bloys said during a presentation in New York on Thursday. An official premiere date will be shared at a later date.

The drama series, which received a straight-to-series order in June 2024 and is based on the DC comic book “Green Lantern,” follows intergalactic cops Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) as they are drawn into a dark Earth mystery to investigate a murder in America’s heartland.

Production on the series began in February. At the time, DC Studios presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran shared plans for “Lanterns” to premiere in early 2026 and consist of eight episodes. Reports later surfaced saying the hope was to premiere the series after the studio’s “Supergirl” movie was released in June.

Chris Mundy (“True Detective: Night Country,” “Ozark”) will serve as showrunner and is set to co-write the series with fellow executive producers Damon Lindelof (“Watchmen,” “The Leftovers”) and Tom King (“Mister Miracle,” “Supergirl”).

James Hawes (“Slow Horses,” “Black Mirror,” “Snowpiercer”) will direct the first two episodes and serve as EP. The series is produced in association with Warner Bros. Television.

A previous iteration of a “Green Lantern” TV series was in the works before James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC. This version was created by Greg Berlanti and Finn Wittrock was lined up for a starring role.
