Date fixed in the special elections to fill the headquarters of the empty house caused by the assassination of Melissa Hortman

Voters now know when they go to the ballot box to vote during a special election to fill in a seat left vacant after the assassination of Melissa Hortman last month.

Late Friday morning, Governor Tim Walz announced that the elections would take place on Tuesday September 16 for House District 34B, which represents parts of the counties of Anoka and Hennepin. The complete proclamation may be found below.

If necessary, a special primary election will take place on Tuesday August 12.

Earlier this week, Brooklyn Park municipal councilor Christian Eriksen announced his candidacy for the siege, adding that he was looking for the approval of the DFL.

Applicants have between Tuesday 15 and July to file necessary documents with the Secretary of State or the County Auditors.

Hortman and her husband, Mark, were murdered on June 14 at their home in Brooklyn Park. The alleged shooter, Vance Boelter, is charged with their murders before the Court of State and Federal.
