Chicago Crime: 2 Loop Shootings Leave 1 Dead, 8 Teens Injured, CPD Says

On a night when Chicagoans were celebrating the start of the holiday season, chaos erupted after two shootings left one person dead and several others injured in the city’s downtown area.

The two shootings happened just an hour apart Friday evening, according to Chicago police.

Officers responded to the first shooting shortly before 10 p.m. in the 100 block of N. State Street, where they found a large group on the sidewalk.

They heard gunshots and saw the large group begin to flee the scene. Officers later found several people who had been shot, including:

  • A 15-year-old boy who had an abrasion on his left thigh. He was transported to Stronger Hospital in good condition.

  • A 13-year-old girl who was shot in the leg. She was transported to Lurie Children’s Hospital in fair condition.

Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd Ward) reported on social media that “300 miners” were “rioting” in the Loop at the time of the shooting. He also said CPD officers were “attacked and injured with sledgehammers and stun guns,” leading to one officer being hospitalized, but CPD did not confirm that information Saturday.

Less than an hour later, officers went to the 100 block of S. Dearborn around 10:40 p.m. where they found two people who had been shot.

A 14-year-old boy was shot and taken to Northwestern Hospital where he died, police said.

A second victim, an 18-year-old man, was shot in the left and was also taken to Northwest in serious condition. He was unable to provide details about the shooting to investigators.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting.

It was unclear whether the two shootings were related.

What they say:

Mayor Brandon Johnson spoke to the press, reminding Chicago youth that they should not attend unauthorized events advertised on social media.

“Due to the reckless behavior of a few individuals, our families are devastated and our downtown residents are reluctant to leave their homes,” he continued.

“The holiday season is a time when we come together as a city. It’s a time when we spend time with our families and loved ones,” Johnson said. “This is the type of opposing behavior that everyone wants to see. We have too many guns and too many young people who don’t value their own lives or the lives of others, and when we suffer a setback like this, it reminds us of the long road we still have to go to build the city we all want to live in.”

The mayor’s office said additional police resources would be deployed during Saturday night’s Magnificent Mile Lights Festival.
