Five seasons later, how are you making sure that Emily is growing and maturing and learning, compared to season one’s Emily, and what conversations have you had with Lily Collins about that?
This is something Lily wants and expects, and it’s more of what I discussed with my writing team; It’s something we focus on. I think it’s really important that Emily grows up and I think she did that this season. It was a more mature season for her, and I also think her French improved.
Lucas Bravo previously said he might not return for season five because he wasn’t happy with Gabriel’s recent decisions. But I see that he has come back and is really going alone this season. What conversations did you have with Lucas about his character’s story?
In fact, no conversation. He just wanted to be a part of the season and trusted me he would be happy, and I think he was.
So what were the discussions in the writers’ room like that led to Gabriel leaving Paris?
Gabriel was a little late in his own journey this season. I think there wasn’t really a place in the story for Emily and Gabriel; that wasn’t the topic of the season. But at the same time, he’s been part of the storyline of the series since the beginning, so he’s a character that I didn’t want to see disappear.

You also included an American-themed July 4th episode this season. Why was it important to dedicate an entire episode to Emily’s house?
I just feel like it would be something that anyone from the States, living in Paris all this time, would think about. You would be homesick. We really wanted to play with that, solve that problem. And also being able to play out what it means to be American in Paris on the 4th of July.
Mindy also found herself in her own love triangle this season, with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) and Nicolas (Paul Forman). Can you explain to me how she got there, as well as this surprising proposal in the finale?
Mindy went from nothing to too much, and the idea of Mindy and Alfie was just too irresistible, these two troublemakers finding each other. I suspected they might have good chemistry as actors. They would have great chemistry with anyone because they both have a lot of charisma, and they are so fun and outgoing and seeing them together I knew sparks would definitely fly. But her heart is also with Nicholas who really hurt her. So she has to deal with a lot of mixed and confusing emotions.

Even though Emily and Marcello have had their ups and downs this season, it initially seemed like they were going to be endgame. What led to the decision for them to ultimately go their separate ways in the finale?
I always thought Emily would be faced with the decision of moving with Marcello to his small town in Italy and choosing what her life would be, and I think in the end, that’s just not the choice she wanted to make for her life. And even if it hadn’t really been on the table for her, it would have gotten there eventually, and I think she saw that there was a big fork in the road for her in terms of what she wanted out of her life.
Was there ever the idea of Emily going long distance with Marcello?
I think he made it pretty clear that it wouldn’t be a long distance. This was going to be her life there and she was going to join him there.

When they separate, Emily emphasizes the importance of her own career and the life she has built in Paris. Is your goal to make Emily represent the type of independent woman today?
I think she does. That’s a bit of what this illustrates. This ending is her truly choosing her own life in Paris, her work and what she has worked so hard for. I think ultimately that’s where her heart was and it clarified for her that she wants to be in Paris and she wants to live there, and it’s not a temporary thing.
As for Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulie), even if she always stands tall and keeps people at a distance, we start to see her go through this season with her divorce from Laurent and then almost losing the Grateau Agency. Can you talk about showing a more vulnerable side to Sylvie?
I really wanted to see a little more vulnerability with Sylvie. I think you always want to see the chinks in the characters’ armor, but you have to figure out how to get there. So we really got to understand her personal life better and I think Sylvia has a lot of heart, especially when it comes to Emily’s concerns.

Some other countries have campaigned for Emily to visit them too, such as the Mayor of Lisbon recently. Would you be open to expanding beyond Paris and Italy? I know Greece is teased at the end of season five, where Gabriel is.
It all depends on where the story takes us. It must be organically motivated by the storyline. But yeah, I would say Greece is definitely being teased and I hope Emily says yes to this invitation.
After this finale, he organizes a reunion of Emily and Gabriel. If the series is renewed for a sixth season, what are your hopes for next season’s storyline?
I don’t think Emily and Gabrielle would be… I don’t think it will be an instant relationship, although I believe people can find each other.
