Consumers bury power lines in downtown Midland

MIDLAND, Mich. (WNEM) – Consumers Energy is burying power lines along a downtown Midland street.

The power lines will be buried along Buttles Street, Consumers said. Crews recently began work on a half-mile stretch from Jerome Street to State Street. Consumers will bury existing lines by the end of 2025 and remove the poles in early 2026.

Consumers said the work is a city-funded effort to provide reliable power and will allow construction of a shared-use path.

“Consumers Energy appreciates the coordination with the City of Midland and we are excited to complete work that will make a difference in the community,” said Chris Fultz, Consumers Energy vice president of low-voltage electrical distribution. “We are confident that this project will not only improve the appearance of the area, but also support a stronger, more resilient power grid that will keep the lights on for our customers.” »

Currently, Buttles Street is experiencing lane closures that are expected to continue through 2026, when the Michigan Department of Transportation is expected to replace the section of road starting in March, Consumers said. Drivers are asked to slow down.

Some businesses along the route will be notified if brief power outages may occur, consumers said.

Burial of pipes is part of the consumers’ agenda Reliability Roadmapa plan to reduce the number and duration of power outages.
