Colts QB Anthony Richardson sidelined with a shoulder injury

Indianapolis-The quarter-arre of the Anthony Richardson colts, in the middle of a quarter-back battle with veteran Daniel Jones, aggravated the right shoulder joint that he injured in 2023 and will be sidelined for an indefinite period, said coach Shane Steichen.

Steichen said Richardson had missed the three intersane training sessions this week and will be retained from the compulsory mini-camp next week. Steichen was not engaged when asked if Richardson would be ready for the start of the training camp, which begins on July 22.

The news arrives in Richardson’s heels that approaches trainers after training last week and reporting shoulder pain, said Steichen. After the exam, the doctors determined that he had suffered an aggravation of his AC joint, that Richardson walked five weeks after his recruit season.

This previous injury required end -of -season surgery. This one will not do, said Steichen, but Richardson needs rest.

“I’m not going to put a calendar for the training camp on it, but when it comes back, we will relieve it to launch, then we will go from there,” said Steichen.

When asked if this type of pain is normal for players who have previously suffered injury to AC joints, Steichen said he was not sure.

The news is a major setback for Richardson in the middle of the quarter battle with Jones. Richardson has already missed 17 games in total in two seasons due to injuries, including 12 missed games due to the sprain of the previous shoulder. The colts also put Richardson for two games last season, briefly opting for the veteran Joe Flacco.

The choice n ° 4 in 2023, Richardson arrived in the hope of becoming the quarter of the franchise in Indianapolis. But his injury work brought a blow to these hopes.

Before this injury, Steichen said that Richardson “was in a very good place. He threw it well. The meetings were good. He made very good progress.”

This injury, given his timing, is one of the greatest strokes of Richardson. The colts, dissatisfied with Richardson’s progress during the 2nd year last season, decided to add “competition” to their quarter unit and did so up to a one -year contract of $ 14 million for Jones.

The former choice of giants in the first round which collapsed in New York accepted the offer of the colts with the mentality that he would have the opportunity to resuscitate his career. Richardson’s injury gives him an opening to do this exactly.

“Daniel will get many representatives and then we will see how it goes,” said Steichen.

Richardson’s difficulties on the ground were not the only factor that encouraged them to tackle the quarter position. In the end, the history of injuries with Richardson also came into play.

“We cannot fight our heads against the wall,” said Director General Chris Ballard in January. “We must have a competition in this position just for the fact that the competition makes everyone better, then two, he has not proven that he can play 17 games.” This declaration now seems premonitory with Richardson again sidelined. After having injured his shoulder in 2023, Richardson last season confronted an oblique / hip injury which put it aside for two games and spasms / pain that prevented it for the last two games.

In the absence of Richardson, the choice of sixth round Riley Leonard will occupy place No. 2.. The colts will not take a step for the moment a list of quarter-arre, according to Steichen.
