Clouds and cooler temperatures move into Northern California
KCRA 3 Weather Meteorologist Dirk Verdoorn looks at some cooler changes happening across Northern California over the next few days as well as when rain chances will arrive.
OUR PLEASURE. THANK YOU SO MUCH. AND WE WANT TO MEET WITH METEOROLOGIST DIRK VERDORN FOR A FORECAST CHECK. FORECAST. We had another great day today. LOTS OF SUN OUTSIDE. BUT THINGS WILL CHANGE WHEN WE TAKE A LIVE LOOK HERE FROM OUR HEREFORD STOCKTON SKYCAM. WE EXPECT AN INCREASE IN CLOUD COVER OVERNIGHT, AND THIS WILL LEAD TO A COOLER DAY ON WEDNESDAY, AND WE MAY EVEN SEE A FEW FEATHERS, A FEW LIGHT SHOWERS. MOST OF THIS IS GOING TO BE SOUTH OF SACRAMENTO, BUT WE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE SOME IN SACRAMENTO COUNTY AND OF COURSE IN THE SURROUNDING HILLS AND MOUNTAINS. THERE WILL BE THE CHANCE FOR THIS. WE’RE NOT EXPECTING A LOT OF ACCUMULATION, BUT THERE’S A CHANCE FOR SOME MOISTURE, AND THEN A BETTER CHANCE OF RAIN COMES IN OVER THE WEEKEND. We’ll see that on Saturday morning, and we’ll have to see how it goes. But right now it’s hot. IT’S A SUNNY AND WARM DAY. TEMPERATURES IN THE LOW 80S SACRAMENTO, STOCKTON AND MODESTO 68 DEGREES. CURRENT TEMPERATURE AT LAKE TAHOE. WINDS ARE LIGHT. WE HAVE CALM CONDITIONS. YUBA CITY STOCKTON MODESTO LIGHT WINDS ELSEWHERE IN A LITTLE BREEZE OFFSHORE AND FAIRFIELD HELPING TO RISE THE TEMPERATURE A LITTLE THERE. We still have that ridge of high pressure in place, and that’s why our skies are so clear. BUT THERE IS SOME CLOUD COVER COMING FROM THE SOUTH. It’s a low pressure area there. It’s just a bit of a weak system, but it’s enough. AND THIS IS WHAT WILL BRING THE CLOUDS IN OUR DIRECTION FOR TOMORROW AND GIVE US THIS CHANCE. YOU CAN ALREADY SEE A FEW SHOWERS OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, OVER THE DESERTS, GETTING A LITTLE RAIN. AGAIN, IT WON’T BE A WASHOUT, BUT THERE IS THIS POSSIBILITY OF SOME RAIN. YOU CAN SEE MOST OF THIS WILL BE IN THE HILLS AND MOUNTAINS, BUT WE MAY SEE A FEW OF THESE SHOWERS CROSSING THE VALLEY. AND AGAIN, VERY LIMITED AMOUNTS. WE’RE NOT WATCHING MUCH AND THIS WILL CONTINUE WITH THINGS CLEARING IN THE VALLEY BY WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON. BUT STILL, THE MOUNTAINS SOUTH OF LAKE TAHOE WILL HAVE THIS CHANCE OF A FEW SHOWERS AND EVEN AN ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM POSSIBLE. AT THIS POINT. THINGS WILL CLEAR UP BY THURSDAY. GET SOME SUN AND THEN THE CLOUDS RETURN IN FRIDAY AHEAD OF A COLD FRONT THAT WILL PASS THROUGH. So it happens Saturday morning. NOW MOST OF IT IS GOING TO BE IN THE MOUNTAINS. BUT WE CAN ALSO SEE SOME OF THIS RAIN IN THE VALLEY. AND THIS WILL TAKE US THROUGH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. Looks like another wave is coming. AND SO WE NEED TO SEE IF IT CONTINUES TO STAY IN THE NORTH OR IF WE MAKE IT FLOW TO THE SOUTH. So that’s something we’re going to be monitoring. SO ADDITIONAL PRECIPITATION. SO THE FIRST WAVE COMES TOMORROW, YOU CAN SEE MOST OF THE RAIN IN THE MOUNTAINS AND SOUTH. AND THEN FROM SATURDAY THIS IS WHAT WE CAN EXPECT. WE CAN SEE TRACES UP TO A 10TH OF AN INCH IN MODESTO AND STOCKTON A LITTLE FURTHER NORTH. AND AGAIN, THE MOST OF THE PRECIPITATION WILL BE IN THE SURROUNDING MOUNTAINS. HERE’S YOUR FORECAST FOR TOMORROW. Expect cloudy skies in the morning, then some cloud breaks later in the afternoon, with temperatures in the mid to low 70s. SO BIG DROP IN TEMPERATURES FOR TOMORROW. YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST AND A CHANCE FOR THESE FEATHERS AND SHOWERS TOMORROW. AND THEN A NICE BREAK AND THEN MORE RAIN. LOCATION SATURDAY WITH ANOTHER TEMPERATURE DROP INTO THE 60S

Changes are coming to Northern California, increasing clouds Tuesday night will bring a few showers and light showers Wednesday morning and bring temperatures back to the low 70s. Skies begin to clear late Wednesday afternoon and drier and warmer conditions will persist through Friday. Saturday brings better rain chances with intermittent showers throughout the day. Accumulations will range from trace amounts in the San Joaquin Valley to nearly 0.25″ in locations north of Sacramento. The mountains will receive most of the rain with more than half an inch possible north of I-80. Snow levels will exceed passing level Saturday but drop below 7,000 feet by Sunday. There is potential for chain controls, but confidence is low at this distance. We will continue to update as we get closer to the weekend.
