Mboko made his WTA tour in March and took Gauff with three sets in Rome during his second event.
“I really thought about that during the match,” said Mboko. “I had flashbacks when I played it a little in Rome. I just remember when she got out playing even better and intensified her a little better.
“I wanted to intensify my game a little more and make sure that I correspond to what she produced, and I wanted to stay there with her.”
She ran through the first set in 25 minutes, breaking the American three times.
The second set was a tighter affair that was in service for the first 11 games.
GAUFF failed to convert three points of rupture throughout the set, Mboko seizing his only opportunity to close the victory.
World No 2 GAUFF said: “I think it will be very successful on tour. I’m sure we are going to have many more battles in the future.”
Rising star
Mboko is only the second Joker in the open era to defeat Canada Open after Stephanie Dubois in 2006 (against Kim Clijsters)
She is also the youngest quarter of Canadian Canadian Open finalist since Helen Kelesi in 1987
Mboko, who started the season at No. 333 in the WTA ranking, entered the tournament at 85. The victory over Gauff sends it to No 53 in the live ranking. One more would bring it to n ° 24
