Chelsea are said to have internal concerns over their midfield depth, with Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo once again becoming a target for them.

That’s according to Blues insider Simon Phillips, who says Mainoo’s name came up after discussions with his agent over the summer.

The England international is currently out of favor with Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim and we have previously reported that he will likely look to move away in January.

The Red Devils may be reluctant to let Mainoo join a rival like Chelsea, but the player will surely simply focus on playing more often so he can qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

We’ve already been told that other clubs such as Napoli and Leeds could also be options for Mainoo, and it makes sense that Chelsea are also keen on the 20-year-old.

The west London giants may well believe they could get the best out of Mainoo and give him the opportunities he wants, with the club’s current owners placing a lot of emphasis on recruiting the best young players in world football.

Mainoo has shown a lot of promise, although he doesn’t have much interest at United currently, so CFC might think they could get the most out of him.

What will Man United do in midfield in January?

If Mainoo struggles to play consistently, things could get even tougher for him in the second half of the season.

Elliot Anderson is a top target for MUFC and this will surely only push Mainoo further down the pecking order.

Chelsea would likely have more room for Mainoo as they lack a lot of depth behind Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, with Romeo Lavia’s future surely uncertain after so many fitness issues and a general lack of impact during his time at Stamford Bridge.
