The director of “Dreams of a Life”, Carol Morley, is in pre-production on an adaptation of feature films from her semi-autobiographical novel “7 Miles Out”, ” Variety learned.
Published for the first time in 2015, “7 Miles” is based on the history of Morley’s troubled adolescence after his father’s suicide. He tells the story of Anne, who, after losing her father in tragic circumstances, finds comfort and troubles on the Musical scene of Manchester from the 1970s and 80s. The novel takes place over a period of seven years.
The candidate for Bafta Morley writes and directs the adaptation while her longtime collaborator Cairo Cannon will produce through the production vehicle of the Cannon and Morley Productions duo.
The film should temporarily shoot in November on site in Manchester.
Morley previously discussed the difficulty of taking off the film, especially to review the painful memories around the death of his father. “For any reason, I was naively thought that I would not have to do much about my book to transpose it for the screen and adapt it for the screen,” she told the BBC in 2023. “And I found that I started again … I don’t think a line of dialogue remains really the book.”
The filmmaker’s credits includes “Out of Blue” from 2018 with Mamie Gummer and Toby Jones and “The Falling” of 2014, which includes Maisie Williams and Florence Pugh. She is probably best known for her dramatic documentary from 2011 “Dreams of a Life”, with Zawe Ashton as a woman whose body was not discovered for three years after her death in her apartment.
