Capitals, after the blunder by email, says no decision on the future of Alex Ovechkin

Washington – Capitals said Thursday that no decision had been made on the future of Alex Ovechkin in the NHL after sending an email to seasonal ticket holders next season.

The social media team said the email was made by someone in the business sales service.

Ovechkin broke the Wayne Gretzky career score record this spring and now has a total of 897. The next 2025-26 season is his last on his current contract, signed in 2021, and he will be 40 years old in September.

He said he intended to play next season, which would be his 21st in the league.

Ovechkin comes out of a whirlwind season during which he overcome a broken leg to score 44 goals – the third of the league – and passing the Gretzky career brand 894 which seemed inaccessible.

Ovechkin led the team with five goals in 10 playoff games, but had only one goal in the second round while he and the team failed in the Eastern Conference final for the 15th time in 16 appearances during his career. The only ECF appearance was part of the Stanley Cup of the team in 2018, when Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe trophy as an eliminatory MVP.
