Canada’s Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov advance to quarterfinals at Swiss Indoors

Canadians Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov advanced to the quarterfinals with straight-set victories at the Swiss Indoors on Thursday.

Auger-Aliassime, the 2022 and 2023 champion, hit 28 aces in a 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5) victory over Croatian Marin Cilic.

The Montreal native won 96 percent of the points on his first serve and faced no break points.

The victory extended Auger-Aliassime’s indoor winning streak to six matches after winning the Brussels title last week. The fifth seed remains in the hunt for a place in the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.

Meanwhile, Shapovalov scored a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Frenchman Valentin Royer, hitting 11 aces.

The Richmond Hill, Ont., product broke the Frenchman three times and won 76 percent of the first-serve points.

Shapovalov next faces Brazilian Joao Fonseca, while Auger-Aliassime faces unseeded Spaniard Jaume Munar, who beat second-seeded American Ben Shelton 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday.

With quarterfinal victories, Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov would meet in an all-Canadian semifinal.
