Calm confidence meets a fight for pride

Algeria and Equatorial Guinea will face off on the final day of the group stages of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) Morocco 2025, the duel between two teams whose paths have already taken very different paths.
On one side, the Fennecs, already assured of a place in the round of 16 and seeking to assert their status as real title contenders. On the other, a Nzalang Nacional team mathematically eliminated, but determined to withdraw from the tournament with pride and determination.
The Equatorial Guineans suffered two defeats in Group E against Burkina Faso and Sudan, their defensive weaknesses exposed and their offensive mastery difficult to find. Concerns have also emerged over the health of Pedro Obiang and Santiago Eneme, both injured against Sudan.
Their potential absence would further weaken a team already in search of balance and confidence.
“We know that qualification is no longer possible, but this match is about our dignity. We want to show a different face and give something back to our fans,” Equatorial Guinea head coach Juan Micha told reporters before the match.
It’s a message driven by pride and resilience, as his team looks to rely on discipline, commitment and collective effort against one of the tournament favorites.
Algeria, on the other hand, progressed with composure and authority. Two victories, six points and qualification assured; the work has been done. The focus now turns to finishing first in the group while carefully managing the team.

“Being qualified does not mean that we are taking our foot off the gas. Every CAN match counts. We want to finish first and maintain our momentum,” warned Algerian coach Vladimir Petkovic.
The matchup could also provide a rotation opportunity, allowing key players to rest while others stake their claim. That said, the Fennecs will be without Samir Chergui and JaouenHadjam, both of whom are out after being injured against Burkina Faso. The coach remains optimistic, with the hope of finding the duo available for the round of 16.
On paper, the gap in trust and control is obvious. However, Equatorial Guinea, by playing without pressure, could regain a feeling of freedom.
“When you have nothing to lose, you can surprise,” admitted Esteban Orozco, one of the executives of the Nzalang Nacional team. However, against a well-organized, experienced and full of conviction Algerian team, an upset would be a major challenge.
For Algeria, the objective is simple: stay focused, avoid injuries and send a strong message to the rest of the competition.
“We want to show that Algeria is ready to go far,” summarized defender Rayan Ait Nouri, speaking before the duel.

What was said:
Vladimir Petkovic (head coach of Algeria):
“So far, everything has gone according to plan. We want to conclude this group stage with another victory. Equatorial Guinea remains a dangerous team, capable of raising their level at any time. It is up to us to remain focused and vigilant from the first minute to the last.”
:
“Algeria showed during this CAN that it was a formidable team. Its victories in the group stage made a strong impression. For our part, we want to prove that we are capable of competing with one of the heavyweights of the continent.”
