The first trailer for “Spieding Stars”, the latest feature by the famous Sri Lankan filmmaker Vimukthi Jayasundara, was unveiled before his world premiere in competition at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
The science fiction drama, a co-production of France / India / Sri Lanka, follows the scientist Ananda as she visits the island of Hanuman to carry out the last rites for her father. Located in the dystopian future tormented by “Illvibe” – a pandemic caused by the domination of the machine – Ananda finds herself in quarantine in an isolated hotel where a mysterious star begins to follow it. She finally escapes and seeks refuge with a transgender mother and daughter.
“I chose to build ‘` `illvibe’ ‘, a disease of the future which has its origins in technology and devices to tell a loss and mourning film, an existential experience of all the humanity of today and in the future,” said Jayasundara in the declaration of its director.
The film features Indira Tiwari, Hidayath Hazare, Sauma Liyanage, Samanalee Fonseka, Shreepura Mithra and Kaushalya Fernando. Eeshit Narain is director of photography, with music by Alokananda Dasgutta.
Jayasundara has established himself as a major voice in international cinema, notably winning the Golden Camera in Cannes for his first feature film “The Forsaken Land” (2004). His following films, including “Between Two Worlds” (2009), screened in prestigious festivals, notably Cannes, Venice, Locarno and Toronto.
“” Spinging Stars “is a spiritual liberation film,” explains the director. “He poses a question: at an era of omnipresent voyeurism and technological control, how to keep our humanity?”
The film is presented by House on Fire, Eleenora Images and the production of the film’s advice, with global sales managed by the Diversion based in Bangkok. Biff takes place from September 17 to 26.
