Bronx fire: 2 FDNY firefighters, one resident injured in 5-alarm apartment fire at Claremont grocery store

CLAREMONT, Bronx (WABC) — Two firefighters and a resident are recovering from minor injuries they suffered in a fire that broke out at a deli and spread to the apartments above early Monday morning.
Firefighters were called to the scene on Findlay Avenue in the Claremont area around 3:30 a.m.
Authorities say the fierce fire spread from the grocery store to the second floor and then throughout the five-story building.
Two firefighters and a resident receive treatment for minor injuries.
Authorities say their response was slightly delayed because three cars were illegally parked on separate fire hydrants.
These vehicles have been impounded and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
“It really reminds us that between parking in front of fire hydrants and smoke detectors, there’s a lot of work we need to do together to ensure we’re safe and making sure incidents like this don’t become deadly,” said New York City OEM Commissioner Zach Iscol.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani also responded to the scene early Monday morning and said he was grateful to the FDNY.
The Department of Buildings has issued a complete evacuation order at 1365 Findlay Avenue, affecting 32 apartments and four ground floor commercial spaces.
The Red Cross said 28 families were displaced by the fire, including 60 adults and 25 children.
Authorities are working to help those who lost their homes in the fire.
The FDNY and NYPD will remain on site to monitor the building, and DOB engineers are expected to return for an interagency meeting Tuesday morning.
