Brian Cox played the Patriarch Logan Roy each season of the Smash Hit Hbo series Succession. The character made his family, his employees and his rivals in their boots tremble in each scene in which he was. But even the fans who looked at the house felt terrified by his dominant presence.
Logan was not the type to chop words, without ever saying what he thought. And he often thought of horrible and hurtful things. But there is a particular line that it offers in the last season which cuts more deeply than any other. Even if it is calm and subtle, there is more emotion and truth behind it than any other. Cox himself called her his favorite line of the whole series.
Logan’s last words to her children run a knife
In the last season of SuccessionOne of the best dramatic television series of all time, Logan tries to finalize an agreement with Lukas Matsson so that he can continue and feel comfortable where the company goes for the future. In season 4, episode 2 “rehearsal”, the children are preparing for Connor’s marriage. They are on a forced outing to sing the karaoke, which Connor pushed them to do to celebrate his wedding pending and spend time together. Surprisingly, Logan presents itself and the situation becomes awkward and tense. But it is this line that he pronounces which has stomachs in knots.

While addressing his children and constant push and traction, from front to back for the power of his business, Logan is clearly in a different place from the one he has been in the past. He finally reached a break point. He can no longer bear it and he apologizes, which makes it an offer so that they can all finally move forward and put the past behind them. But while they continue to choose it, offering their own alternative plans, Logan becomes more and more frustrated. Especially since the children come to him, putting Logan on trial for all that he has done wrong to make them since they were children. The anxiety in his eyes, the light leaving his soul suggests who must tell them the truth instead of launching them.

When you appear on an episode of Late at night with Seth Meyers In 2023, when the last season of the series was broadcast, Cox told the host that it was His favorite line from the whole series. “I love this line and just thought,” Why didn’t I say that earlier? ” »» He notes. “They were damaged most of the time not put into service.” On the surface, the line does not sound everything that is insulting. But for a group of adult adult children who have been proud to be Business Mavericks and politically informed people, the line, in a ball, suggests that they are anything but.

They try to imitate their father and his character in everything they do. But the reality is that without his reputation and the richness he gave up for his children, they would probably never have been much. The whole show and the fantastic overall cast were based on the story of Logan recognizing that he could not sit at the head of the table forever and had to find a succession plan. However, none of his children was ready or capable of doing something other than running the business in the ground in his eyes.
Although he entertains the idea of having someone outside the family, he also aroused children by making broken promises. It is obvious that even if he expressed a big disdain for his children, he really loved them even if this moment was the only time he had been heard. He perhaps wanted to trust them, but to choose one child spoiled by another, he turned out to be a challenge. Shiv made decisions with the reckless, and even if she was ruthless, she was not as great negotiator as she thought.

Succession: where each character is at the end of the show
The succession has just ended in a dramatic final, and the fans are surprised by the place where each main character has been found.
Kendall had a complicated past with dependence, and he could never formulate a logical plan. His ideas were everywhere without a light path. Roman was not cut for work pressures, and he did not have the business know-how either, try as he could. And Connor had no interest in doing something other than taking advantage of the business while he was continuing his own passions. Throughout their transactions, Roy children looked more like children trying to play in business than adults who really led her.
Everything was about their own interests, greed and their desperate need for power. It ended up working at their detriment at the end, fueling each of their own falls. Thus, while the line does not sound terribly badly without context, in just nine words, Logan gave a last devastating blow to his children who would remain the words which probably continued to ring in their heads long after his death. He loved them, despite all their shortcomings and their return transactions to push him. But he realizes that they were not at all serious people, in any aspect of their lives.
He decreases them as he always did, but the fact for the first time reluctantly, which somehow strengthens that it really means words. He didn’t do it, at least this time, just to insult or dissuade them. Cox felt him in each fiber of his being. In a way, the line sums up the whole show, and it is easily the best of the four seasons. It is a poetic but scathing line which is less opposite compared to the usual words of Logan. After all, he had fantastic liners in the show, was headed for both his children and the others. But these words cut more deeply than any of the hurtful and insulting things he had ever told his children. Especially because when they boiled everything, they were completely true.
