The Toronto FC “had a point to prove” in the shock of San Diego

The Reds entered the Snapdragon stadium, a place where their hosts had only lost twice before, with a chip on the shoulder. Their opponent, SDFC, is in the middle of one of the best seasons in the history of the MLS by an expansion, seated at the top of the Western Conference. TFC, on the other hand, had only won once in their last seven games.

But it was clear from the first kick that Toronto had learned from their last outing, a devastating 1-1 draw at home against Atlanta United, in which they conceded a penalty goal in the 11th minute of the time of second half.

Toronto looked motivated to change the perception of their season.

“We had the impression that we had a point to prove today,” said the Corbeanu scorer.

Man of the Performance match

Corbeanu can be proud of victory. It was his movement in the box that pulled the hinge penalty in the 18th minute, and his penalty kick that sealed the agreement.

Corbeanu has now scored twice in his last five games and is five best team goals for the season. He generated six goal contributions (5G / 1A) since his arrival on loan from the Granada in February, and seems to begin to evolve towards the reliable attack option that many TFC fans had hoped when he joined the Spanish side of the second division.

“We see a lot of maturity in Theo, in his decision-making and in his conviction that he will be dangerous,” said head coach Robin Fraser. “He just feels very confident at the moment.”

Effort of the heroic rearguard

Corbeanu was not the only player with confidence. TFC prevented San Diego from creating a single chance, did not allow to shoot against the 47th minute, and generally was able to disturb the hosts by winning the majority of duels and defensive actions.

Men to Fraser have proven their point of view.

“We asked them to do unusual things and remain disciplined,” said Frazer. “It was a very good guy match.”

Toronto won his concept proof victory in the way they neutralized one of the most powerful attacks on the League. According to Frazer’s words, Wednesday’s success came thanks to the total commitment of his group, which he believes that his team is able to execute more often.

“The level of engagement must continue now,” said Fraser.

The road does not become easier for Toronto, which is 11 points below the Audi MLS Cup qualifying line with 12 games to play, because they hope to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

With a Saturday competition at the power of the East Conference, Nashville SC, Building (8:30 p.m. HE | MLS Season Pass, Apple TV +), Fraser will have to see more.
