Before Sophie Turner’s reboot, Angelina Jolie’s video game adaptations say goodbye to streaming

Next year will finally see production begin on Prime Video’s new film. tomb Raider series after years of preparation for Lara Croft’s return to the screen. This will be the first time the legendary video game adventurer has gone on a live expedition since 2018. Alicia Vikander-feature led by a big name in his boots- Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner. For viewers who can’t wait to see Turner and his creator Phoebe Waller-BridgeIn the action-adventure franchise’s version, Netflix is still offering the first two films that made Lara Croft a recognizable icon of the big screen, but only for one more month. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and its sequel, The cradle of lifeare expected to leave the platform on January 1st.
Released in 2001, the first tomb Raider immediately set a new standard for video game films with a blockbuster budget of $115 million and a box office of $274.7 million. Until Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in 2010, it was by far the highest-grossing game adaptation to date, surpassing the previous record holder, Pokémon: The First Movieof more than 100 million dollars. At the center of it all, like Croft, was Angelina Jolie in what is considered one of his best and most iconic roles. His confident portrayal of the British archaeologist and embrace of the film’s explosive action sequences earned him widespread praise, although critics were overall unimpressed with the feature and gave it a score of 21% on Rotten Tomatoes. She was also praised for The cradle of life, although the follow-up fared only slightly better with a score of 24% and a much lower worldwide haul of $160.1 million.
Simon West directed Lara Croft: tomb Raiderwhich followed the titular aristocratic treasure hunter on a dangerous globe-trotting adventure after discovering a secret from her missing father that puts her on a collision course with the Illuminati. Responding to his father’s wishes, she aims to find and destroy a powerful ancient artifact which the shadowy organization seeks to exploit for its own gain. In The cradle of lifeled by Jan de Bontshe teams up with a former partner, played by Gerard Butlerto prevent Pandora’s Box from falling into the hands of two dangerous criminals who could unleash the devastating horrors within on humanity. Both films feature plenty of talent surrounding Jolie, including John Glenn, Jon Voight, Chris Barrie, Noah Taylorand a pre-James Bond Daniel Craigas well as Butler, Ciaran Hinds, Djimon Hounsou, Until SchweigerAnd Simon Yam in the sequel.
What do we know about Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s ‘Tomb Raider’?
At present, it is unclear how Waller-Bridge tomb Raider The series will be closer to Lara compared to the four other titles featuring the adventurer. While the Jolie-led films specifically adapt classic games from the PlayStation 1 era, the Vikander film, and the recent Netflix animated series, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croftwith Hayley Atwellboth taken from Crystal Dynamics’ series of grittier reboots exploring Lara’s origins. Waller-Bridge hinted in 2023 that she wanted to bring back the ’90s vibe to the series, indicating that it would be more in line with what made Croft such a popular character in the first place. More information will certainly arrive shortly after the cameras start rolling on January 19.
