2011 interview: How Music brings Brian Wilson in the 1960s brings back

Original surviving members of the Beach Boys paid tribute to Brian Wilson, their legendary leader and co-founder, who died at the age of 82.

They recognized his “genius”, with Mike Love saying that his “musical gifts were unrivaled” and had “changed the music course forever”.

Addressing the BBC Radio 4 today, group comrade Al Jardine said: “He was a humble musical giant, and his huge musical intellect was apparent early. In the same thing, he did not need or did not want attention, was only interested in making the best possible music.”

Jardine added that Wilson should be recalled “like a real gentleman, a real musical intellect, who has taught the world to smile”.

Bob Dylan was among the other greats of music by paying tribute, saying: “Heard the sad news of Brian today and I thought of all the years when I listened to him and admire his genius. Rest in peace dear Brian”.

Sir Elton John described him as a “real giant” who had the “greatest influence” on his writing.

“He was a musical genius and a revolutionary. He changed the goal posts when it was a question of writing songs and shaped music forever.”

The singer-songwriter Carole King described Wilson as “my friend and my brother in writing”, adding: “The world will miss Brian, but we are so lucky to have his music.”

John Cale du Velvet Underground said: “For me, Brian Wilson was not only a question of surf music, rather a real musical genius that rises to the fusion of surprising sophistication. We will miss powerfully.”

Announcing Wilson’s death Wednesday, her family said that she had “broken heart” and “as far as a word”. Their declaration did not give.

The Beach Boys were one of the largest American groups, the success of which competed with the Beatles in the 1960s.

Born in 1942 and raised in Hawthorne, California, Wilson formed a group with his young brothers Carl and Dennis, Cousin Love and his Garden friend.

They then sold More than 100 million records worldwide, according to the group’s website.

Wilson produced dozens of successful singles, including the three number one songs I do, Help Me, Rhonda and Good Vibrations.

He was known to have used the recording studio to create unique sounds, especially on the album Pet Sounds, which contributed to his reputation as a pioneer of music.

Frank Sinatra’s daughter, Nancy, who had a high -level musical career at the Gold Estation in Beach Boys, shared a photo with Wilson on Instagram.

“His darling music will live forever as he travels to the universe and beyond,” she wrote. “May God bless you, sweet Brian.”

Brian Wilson was a pioneer of music

Mick Fleetwood, from the Fleetwood Mac group, wrote: “Anyone with a musical bone in his body must be grateful to the magic touch genius of Brian Wilson !! and very saddened by this major worldly loss !!”

Sean Ono Lennon, son of the Beatles leader, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, called Wilson the “American Mozart” and a “unique genius from another world”.

“Anyone who knows me really knows how much I am a broken heart about Brian Wilson who passes,” he wrote on X.

“Few people have influenced me as much as him. I feel very lucky to have been able to meet him and spend time with him. He has always been very nice and generous.”

Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood said his “world was in mourning” because he noted that Sly Stone and Wilson died this week.

“If there was a human being who made the art of inexpressible sadness, it was Brian Wilson,” wrote the musician Questlove in a long tribute on Instagram.

Gene Simmons de Kiss remembered Wilson as a “visionary”, adding: “Thank you for a life of wonderful melodies that lasted decades.”

Micky DOLENZ, the latest surviving member of The Monkees group, wrote about Wilson’s death: “His melodies shaped a generation, his harmonies changed the game and his soul has passed in each note.”

Wilson lost his wife Melinda in 2024. The couple had been married for 24 years and adopted their children Dakota Rose, Daria Rose, Delanie Rose, Dylan and Dash together.

Wilson also had two daughters, Carnie and Wendy, from his first marriage.

The musician was diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic in 1984, according to Forbes, when doctors found evidence that his consumption of psychedelic drugs had potentially damaged his brain.

In February 2024, it was revealed that he was dementia.
