Barbie Ferreira calls the director of “Mile End Kicks”, Chandler Levack, his “Canadian compass”
Barbie Ferreira never had an accent before “Kile End Kicks”.
The actor “Euphoria” plays in the Roma autobiographical com com of the writer / director Chandler Levack. In the film, Ferreira plays a version of Levack herself, who worked as a music critic before she was presenting films at the Toronto International Film Festival. Unlike Ferreira, who grew up in New York and New Jersey, Levack is a born and high Canadian.
“I was so excited,” Ferreira told Thewrap. “It was the first time that I really played someone who was simply not culturally, part of me. Also, the fact that I played thanks In Montreal I was really interesting, because I am not familiar to Montreal either, so I was able to bring a kind of joy and curiosity to the wide eyes in Montreal which was very authentic. “I loved observing Canadians,” joked Ferreira.
Ferreira and Levack were joined by the members of the distribution “Mile End” Stanley Simons, Devon Bostick and Juliette Gariépy to speak with Joe McGovern of Thewrap at Tiff 50 Friday. “Mile End Kicks” is based on Levack’s own life, with Ferreira with the writer / director stand-in (here named Grace Pine). The film follows Grace as it moves to Montreal in the hope of writing a book on the emblematic album of Alanis Morissette “Jagged Little Pill” – to become the publicist of an independent group with romantic links with two of its members.
“I wrote the script the first project in 2015, so I have been working on it for a decade,” said Levack. “I was a musical critic at the beginning of the twenty and I moved to Montreal in the summer of 2011, and it was so exciting to be there. The music scene was in a way at this time pivot with these underground concerts with Grimes and Mac Demarco and Tops and Sean Nicholas Savage, and therefore I think I felt like such a cinematographic memory. I wanted to recruit him. ”.
And recreate it. The film made comparisons with “almost famous”, another autobiographical story of a young musical journalist becoming integrated into the world they admire. As with this functionality of Cameron Crowe in the early 2000s, Ferreira had the advantage of learning his character from the source – the writer / director of the film.
“I literally observed her. She was my Canadian compass,” said Ferreira. “It was really cool to have a collaboration where you can have a reference point where the character should be really. Of course, we have fictitious and so on, but it was really cool to have that.”
