Tottenham ready to offer £52m for striker Thomas Frank called ‘remarkable’

Tottenham are reportedly willing to pay more than £50million for a striker who manager Thomas Frank has already described as “outstanding”, with the Lilywhites currently struggling for creativity in the final third.

On paper, Spurs have had a very solid start to the season under Frank’s leadership.

Only Arsenal, Man City and Chelsea have more goals in the Premier League so far this season, with Frank’s side having lost just two of their opening eight top-flight matches and by very narrow margins.

However, there has been a recurring criticism regarding Spurs’ recent encounters, namely their inability to convince going forward.

Xavi Simons is at the center of debate following his lack of goal contributions since a £52million move from RB Leipzig this summer. His arrival was largely intended to fill the void left by James Maddison’s long-term injury and the continued absence of fellow creative Dejan Kulusevski, but Simons has just one assist to show for his efforts so far.

Concerns also surround the north Londoners’ attacking options.

Mathys Tel, despite scoring against Leeds United at Elland Road before the international break, was largely ineffective in Tottenham’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa last weekend. This came after Tel was given the nod again ahead of Richarlison, who was criticized by some sections of the media for his lack of consistency.

Dominic Solanke is expected to return shortly after undergoing minor ankle surgery, but the England international’s fitness issues have been fairly consistent since his record transfer from club Bournemouth last summer.

As a result, Spurs are being linked with new strikers ahead of January, and one of them is former Brentford star Ivan Toney.

The England international, who scored 20 Premier League goals in his best season at G-tech under Frank’s tutelage, has been scoring for fun in the Middle East since his £40 million move to Al-Ahli last year.

The 29-year-old has scored 39 goals in 56 appearances for Al-Ahli, but Toney’s decision to move to Saudi Arabia threatens his place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans.

Toney, apart from one nod earlier this year, has been largely left out of the Three Lions squad, and the prospect of a return to the Premier League to improve his chances of an England recall could appeal to him.

Some reports suggest that Frank personally contacted Toney about joining Spurs on loan in January, and there is now another update on the club’s interest.

According to Spanish media sources, if a mid-season loan proves impossible, Tottenham are prepared to offer £52 million for Toney and bring him back to the Premier League in 2026, with the north Londoners described as further along than Chelsea in a potential move for him.

It’s worth noting that West Ham have also been linked with a move for Toney, so it appears a host of London clubs are weighing up the prospect of his signing.

However, there could be major hurdles to overcome, the main one being his seismic £427,000-a-week salary.

Toney would almost certainly need to take a massive pay cut to seal a return to England, but if Spurs co-sporting directors Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici find a realistic way to do it, there is no denying that Frank would be delighted to have the number nine.

“Ivan is amazing in so many ways,” Frank said in 2023.

“The way he handles pressure and distractions is incredible.

“He scored goals, played for the team and led the team. He is outstanding.

“I can only speak about the Ivan I see every day at this club, and he is a fantastic person within the group. He has this unique emotional intelligence to be aware of all the players and every member of staff.

“Ivan is training well and he is clearly the number two striker in England, it shows in his goals and performances.”
