BADLANDS Director Talks Potential Sequel, Previews Franchise Premiere [SPOILER]

Although a Predator: Badlands The sequel has not yet been announced, the final scenes of the film definitely leave the door open for a sequel by teasing the introduction of a character which represents a first for the Predator franchise.

If you haven’t watched Badlands however, major spoiler follow.

After dispatching Tessa and her Weyland-Yutani synth team, Dek, Thia and Bud head to Yautja Prime, where the young warrior faces his father in single combat. Although we’ve seen female Predators in the comics and perhaps the cartoons, Killer of killers movie (they weren’t featured, but there must have been a few women in that massive crowd), they have yet to appear in live-action. We don’t actually see Dek’s mother, but something tells us she won’t be congratulating her son on his victory!

During an interview with Varietydirector Dan Trachtenberg discussed the ending and what the introduction of Dek’s mother could mean for a potential sequel.

“What I like about this ending is that it works as a final twist to the story we’ve just seen, but also sets up an anticipation for something that I find rather groovy. If I were to move forward, I don’t think that would be the only reason, but it would be a very interesting element to include.

The great thing is we now have all these interesting characters, and who knows who will be next? I didn’t know the next one would be “Killer of Killers” or Dek’s story, and then we ended up doing both at the same time. There are plenty of open doors to go through next, that’s for sure.”

Some Expanded Universe documents describe female Yautja (Yautjas?) as being more dominant and aggressive than males, so it will be interesting to see if a potential Badlands the sequel takes a similar approach.

As for where things stand with another film, Trachtenberg has an idea of ​​where he’d like to take the story next, but makes it clear that plans could always change.

“Everything can go away once we start putting pen to paper, but I’ve looked as far and wide as I can to feel comfortable in what I’m doing. Each movie is a complete thought, a little different from the early Marvel stuff before the first Avengers movie, where it seems like these are great movies, and here we are, making things fit together in a delightful way. But they weren’t saying, ‘See how everything is interconnected like crazy all at once.’ shot. suddenly! So I’m trying to learn that lesson and make sure that each of these films that we make is a great idea in its own right. »

Predator: Badlands is helmed by returning director Dan Trachtenberg (Prey, 10 Cloverfield Lane) and marks the franchise’s highly anticipated return to the big screen with a story that expands and redefines the Predator universe.

Set in the future on an isolated and deadly planet, Badlands follows a young Predator outcast (played by newcomer Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) who finds an unlikely ally in Thia (Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Elle Fanning) as he embarks on a perilous journey in search of the ultimate adversary.
