‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Sets Christmas Box Office on Fire with $90 Million 4-Day Weekend

Disney/20th Century/Lightstorm’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash” leads the Christmas box office to a 4-day global total of at least $240 million, with $22.6 million in receipts on its second Friday, as it heads toward a $66 million 3-day total/$90 million 4-day total and a 10-day domestic total of $213 million.

Despite being 18% behind “Avatar: The Way of Water’s” total of $261 million, James Cameron’s blockbuster is still on track to overtake its Disney counterpart, “Zootopia 2,” as the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025 as of early January.

Speaking of “Zootopia 2,” this Disney sequel is enjoying a big holiday rebound and will be the top animated Christmas movie in its fifth weekend, beating out the second weekends of Angel’s “David” and Paramount’s “The Sponge Bob Movie: SquarePants.”

According to industry estimates, “Zootopia 2” ranks second from Friday to Sunday. period with $20.3 million, an increase of 37% compared to the weekend before Christmas. The film surpassed the $300 million domestic mark on Christmas Day and is heading toward an estimated $321 million domestic total through Sunday.

“David” is estimated for a 3-day weekend of $14 million and a 10-day cume of $51 million, while “SpongeBob” trails with an $11 million second weekend and a two-weekend total of $38 million.

With international sales figures still strong, particularly in Asia, “Zootopia 2” is on track to overtake “Frozen II” as the highest-grossing Disney animated film of all time.

Back on the live-action side, A24’s “Marty Supreme” rides months of movie-going hype to a $17.5 million 3-day/$27 million 4-day opening weekend, at 2,668 locations. Including its week-long run in six theaters in New York and Los Angeles, Josh Safdie’s thriller starring Timothee Chalamet will have a total of $30 million through Sunday.

With this debut, “Marty Supreme” will easily surpass the $50 million theatrical release mark of Safdie’s 2019 film “Uncut Gems,” which it will have to do given its $70 million production budget before release. Audience buzz is also strong for the film with 95% reviews and 83% total audience.
