Aston Villa did not have the chance to miss a place in the Champions League, but should go win the Europa League next season, said former defender Richard Dunne.
An objective refused to Old Trafford on the last day of the season turned out to be expensive while the team of Unai Emery finally finished in sixth place in the Premier League.
But Dunne says that after shaking this disappointment, they can continue and imitate Tottenham by winning the second level competition in the coming season.
He told William Hill Vegas: “The refused goal was a joke. You can understand the frustration of Aston Villa.
“It is disappointing that they are not in the Champions League, but they are now the favorites now to win the Europa League next season, in my opinion.
“They should consider next season as a chance to win a European trophy. It was therefore a slightly disappointing end of the season, but it looks positive for the future.
“They will be there or almost in the first five in search of a place in the Champions League, it will be great for them. But the Europa League is an opportunity for them to get their hands on a trophy, which they have not done for a long time.”
Villa won a trophy for the last time in 1996.
