Assessment, results, objectives of CAN 2025

Senegal topped Group D despite having a man sent off in a comfortable win over Benin at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Former Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly saw red in the second half of his 100th cap for a clumsy foul but the result was never in doubt in Tangier.
Benin joined group winners and DR Congo in the round of 16 despite the defeat, and will face Egypt in the round of 16 next Monday.
Senegal will face either Sudan or Burkina Faso in the round of 16 – with Koulibaly’s suspension the only bad news from their training on Tuesday evening.
Central defender Abdoulaye Seck gave Senegal the lead before goals from Habib Diallo and substitute Cherif Ndiaye sealed the victory.
Koulibaly, 34, who led Senegal to victory in the 2021 edition of the tournament, was initially shown a yellow card for his foul on Aiyegun Tosin, when he hit the back of the Benin striker’s ankle with his boot, but it was upgraded to a red after a VAR review.
