Ashes 2025/26: Rehan Ahmed in the running for England Squad for winter series against Australia | Cricket news

Rehan Ahmed is in the running to be included in the England team for the Ashes of this winter series in Australia.

It is understood that Hmed is in the context in front of Liam Dawson, who played the fourth test of the series drawn with India after Shoaib Bashir broke his finger.

The versatile had an impressive summer with Bat and Ball for his county Leicestershire, who was confirmed this week as champion of division two of the county championship.

Rehman also appeared for England in white ball games this summer, including in T20i’s victory against Ireland on Wednesday.

Ahmed has not played for the test side since the fifth test against Pakistan in October 2024, England promoting Tom Hartley, Bashir and the most recently Dawson as an option of rotation on the front line.

England coach Brendon McCullum is confident Ben Stokes and Mark Wood will be clear for injuries for the series in what would represent a substantial boost for the team’s Bowling department.

England seeks to regain ashes for the first time in 10 years and, at the same time, to address their lamentable record in Australia since their 2010/11 tour – having failed to win a single test in 15 attempts, losing 13.

Michael Atherton thinks that Hmed is Adil Rashid’s “natural successor” for England in white ball cricket

Unconvinced Athers on Ahmed test skills titles

Former England captain Michael Atherton believes that even if Ahmed should be considered for the duty of England in limited cricket, he is not convinced that he should be selected for the test side.

“He had an exceptional season in all formats,” said Atherton. “He was superb in the championship, he was more than counters.

“His role is much more clearly defined in the cricket of a day at the moment and I see him a lot of Adil Rashid’s successor, he is perfect for white ball cricket.
