Arvid Lindblad: Red Bull Teenage Protege granted a super F1 license to 17 years after a special exemption granted | F1 News

Red Bull’s British junior pilot, Arvid Lindblad received a super F1 license after the team’s request for a special exemption for their 17 -year -old protégé was granted by the FIA.

Super licenses are compulsory to run in F1 and are generally not allocated until a driver is 18 years old, provided that they have also accumulated enough points to qualify for a thanks to finishing positions in other formulas in the previous three years.

However, in a revision of the rule established last year, the exemption can now be granted by the director body to a 17 -year -old young person if they have also “recently demonstrated exceptional capacity and maturity in the competition of unique preparation cars”.

Lindblad is currently third in its first season of Formula 2, the Feeder series directly below F1, and won two races. He won the regional Oceanian formula championship at the start of the year – which obtained enough qualification points for a super license once he was 18 years old – and finished fourth in his F3 season in 2024.

Lindblad is 18 years old on August 8.

Red Bull’s request for an exemption was made several weeks ago, but the request was only discussed by the World FIA Sports Council at its last meeting in Macao on Tuesday, the first body session since the end of February.

“The FIA received a request to grant a super license to Arvid Lindblad before its 18th birthday,” said a FIA press release.

“After examining the information presented in support of this request, the World Council noted that the driver had recently and regularly demonstrated exceptional capacities and maturity in the competition of formula car in complainants and therefore approved the request.”

Will Lindblad appear in an F1 session this year?

The early attribution of a super license to Lindblad, who was born in Surrey and a Swedish father and a mother of the Indian inheritance, means that the 17 -year -old would now be free to appear in F1 sessions was Red Bull, who had two teams, wishing to try it.

All F1 teams are required to manage inexperienced drivers in two training sessions in each car during the season. Red Bull directed Ayumu Iwasa in Japan in P1 at the Bahrain Grand Prix in April.

And although Red Bull’s request for a great early license for Lindblad was made some time ago, which means that the two situations are not connected, the approval was granted before a period of two races when the star driver of their Max Verstappen team was walking a rope after the collision of the world champion with George Russell in the Spanish Grand Prix a breed ban.

Verstappen must navigate the following two races – the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend and the Austrian GP on June 29 – without perceiving other penalty points to avoid having to attend a race. Two points expired from his license on June 30, which would give him a breathing space.

Red Bull’s senior team had to find a unique replacement for Verstappen, then one of the two drivers running for sister team racing bulls – Isack Hadjar or Liam Lawson – would be almost inevitably called to fill.

Such a scenario, however, would in turn create a unique vacancy in the junior outfit to be filled.

Iwasa, 23, is the more experienced backup option of Red Bull and led during Friday training sessions for the two teams, while Lindblad would also be a formal alternative.
